The Year in Review: 2010 in Travels and Tribulations

My good years and bad years seem to come in waves. In order for She’s in Love with the World to even have a “Year in Review,” I need to bring it all the way back to mid-2009, when I first decided to take the leap into the unknown world of travel and blog writing. I was laid off, the economy was bad and I was pretty damn directionless. Ask anyone. As 2009’s close drew near, it looked as though 2010 would be the Year of the Awesome for me, and for the most part, it was.

How to Deal: Budgeting (Part II)

Weeks ago, I published one of my most successful posts yet on how I budgeted myself throughout Southeast Asia. It wasn’t meant to be a comprehensive guide on how any subsequent Southeast Asian vagabonds should travel, but just a rough outline of where I spent the most and what I spent my money on. Since then, I’ve been compiling my best tips and tricks (and those of other travel bloggers) for Part II of my budgeting extravaganza.

When I finally decided to tackle the budget questions I receive in a proper post, I decided I didn’t want to offer a definitive guide on how to budget a backpacking adventure. So many travel blogs and websites offer strict rules for saving and spending for backpackers to abide by, but those don't work for everyone — myself included.

How to Deal: Lost ATM Card

Of all the things that a traveler could lose or have stolen, bank or credit cards are easily the worst. They serve as the lifeline to travels, because let’s face it, without money (even the littlest bit) a traveler can’t do much.

How to Deal: Treacherous Travel Days

Up until now, traveling from place to place has been easy. Too easy, even. It was only a matter of time before the luxuries of air-conditioned sleeper trains and vans magically appearing for us when they needed to would be no longer.

How to Deal: Packing

How to Deal: Packing

Before leaving for Thailand I must’ve packed and unpacked my backpack in test runs at least a dozen times. I’m a notorious overpacker, so every time I’d stuff my bag in the comforts of my room I kept finding shirts I wanted to bring or sundresses I felt couldn’t’ be neglected. No matter how many times I applied the “pack everything you need and take half out” rule, I couldn’t seem to find the perfect balance.

Photo of the Week: Packing Nightmares

Since we haven't officially left yet, and Andrea and I are both in our respective New England locations of Vermont and Connecticut, I'm going to offer up my first (and maybe only) "Photo of the week" post. Andrea and I have been on and off the phone nonstop for the past week packing and unpacking our 70L backpacks. We've finished all major shopping necessary and now it's just a matter of organization.

How to Deal: The Reactions

Over the past few months, I’ve heard it all. From the references to "Taken," "Hostel" and other travel-thrillers to the ever-pressing “Get your act together, get a job and settle down,” I really feel like I have heard it all. So how do you deal with the reactions of others when there are more Eeyores than there are Tiggers? (And yes, that Disney reference just happened.)
