Roadtrippin’ and Rejoining the Workforce

Midway into my fourth week of a new job, I've realized quite a few things about myself and, what it is exactly, that irks me about the 9-5 grind. It only took about 20 paper cuts, cotton mouth and a whirlwind road trip with my boyfriend to Washington, D.C. this past weekend to help me figure out what I already knew while staring at my longtail boat background on my office computer every day.

Celebrating My Layoff Anniversary

One year after being laid off, I’m sitting and reflecting on one of my worst weeks ever…from Bangkok, Thailand. I’m nearly five months into travel, living in Bangkok and show no signs of slowing down. Turns out, losing my job was the best thing that could ever happen to me.

Red Shirt Protests Turn Ugly in Bangkok

The political upheaval is brought to us by two opposing camps: the red shirts and yellow shirts. Both groups are driven by Thaksin Shinawtra, the former prime minister of Thailand, who was ousted by the military in coup in the fall of 2006. While the red shirts support him, the yellow shirts do not.

From Journalist to Blogger

When it comes to media, consider me a 72-year-old man. I much prefer to see the New York Times in print with a cup of coffee than on some “fandangled” Kindle or computer screen, thank you. The same goes for reading my tattered, highlighted and torn copies of Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye” or Kerouac’s “On the Road” (two of my personal favorites).

How it All Began…

I always knew I’d see the world, but falsely assumed it couldn’t be done until much later in life — cruising on early bird specials and senior discount entrances to the Vatican. I grew up in a very normal household filled with family dinners, good grades and lots of friends. I coasted (well, speed-walked) on the American treadmill ride through college as the executive editor of the student newspaper and finished school a year early, jumping right into my first job at a local newspaper at the ripe age of 20. Yes, folks…all before the big 2-1.

10 Things You May Not Know about Sarah

I’d imagine that most of my readers will be family and friends trying to keep tabs on my whereabouts and adventures in far-off lands. However, there is the off chance that you’ve come across my site through a random link or search. This Web site is not only a public diary of my travels, but also one where people can find packing tips, travel and destination advice and most importantly, inspiration to do something like this in their lifetime.
